Drawing on my experience as an Interior Architect, these geometric abstract works are inspired by the practice of creating a material palette for an interior space. Shapes are arranged in a still life manner with a playful take on colour to give an illusion of transparency and layering.

I feel our society has an unhealthy addiction to perfectionism. Some carry the weight of being perfectly beautiful and fear the inevitable human condition of aging. Others are living in submissive shadows outshone by the perception of superiority. I have tried to depict these ideas in my painting with the roses losing their petals as they age and the submissive pose of the model under the weight of her Haute Couture hat.

THE SILENCE

I had been looking at the paintings of Sydney Long and the Art Nouveau style that he developed. I wanted to play with this and combine what I produced in previous works. In particular, replicating the delicate lacework of typical Australian trees and their branches. Mosquito Hill is up near Mount Jagged SA. This work was a combination of two scenes I came across on the day. What I wanted to convey was the silence of a landscape that appeared devoid of life.

TREV’S CRAZY COW PADDOCK

Being a Blade Runner fan I found myself thinking about electronic cows and what they would dream of, and this image came to my mind. It was inspired by a photo shoot taken around the Mount Jagged area. This surreal work is part real and part of the subconscious. It occurred to me much later when looking at the finished work, who would be crazy enough to put a paddock on a cliff face?

Using the ancient technique of Encaustic, these landscapes are about a sense of place, colour, and texture. Molten-pigmented beeswax hardened with Damar is layered and lightly fused with a blowtorch or heat gun. Producing delightful results, Encaustic hardens over time and can be buffed to a shine.

This collection speaks to my love of hand-building organic shapes with clay. Each piece is wrapped in botanicals and placed in a pit to let fire have the final say. Look closely and you’ll see shadows of leaves and trees. With this process, I pay homage to the balance of earth, plants, and fire.
