FLEURIEU ICONS EXHIBITION 2026
Fleurieu Icons brings together five of the Fleurieu Peninsula's most celebrated and beloved artists — Lesley Redgate, Brian O'Malley, John Lacey, Louise Vadasz, and Chris Summer — for a landmark exhibition at the Fleurieu Arthouse. Each artist has forged a distinctive creative voice deeply rooted in the landscapes, communities, and spirit of this remarkable region, earning the admiration and loyalty of collectors and art lovers across the Peninsula and beyond. Together, their works offer an extraordinary window into the artistic heart of the Fleurieu — a vibrant conversation between five unique visions united by a shared sense of place. Icons of the Fleurieu is a rare opportunity to experience the depth and diversity of local artistic talent, and a celebration of the enduring cultural life that makes this region so special
JOHN LACEY
John is a self-taught artist, who began painting as a hobby around 1980 whilst working as a Motor Body Design Draftsman. He then went on (after more study) to work for himself as a Graphic Designer until 2004. During this twenty year period he continued to paint and gained a reputation and a following, which afforded him the pleasure of being able to become a professional artist in 2004. John has an absolute passion for painting and has spent countless hours at the easel, not to mention ten years of life drawing to hone his skills. His work is about self expression of the landscape and the occasional portrait.
In 2009 John & his wife Lydia, decided to move to Mt Compass where they designed and built a new home, studio and gallery from were John works, teaches and sells his work. Along with this they have developed a beautiful garden, which adds to the experience of visiting.
As a professional artist painting in oil, John has won numerous art prizes, including the coveted Corporate Prize at the Victor Harbor Rotary Exhibition 2007.

BRIAN O’MALLEY
The irony is a “Fleurieu icon” exhibition with a painting of Innes National Park and one painting of Aldinga Beach. The Yorks magnificent beaches are a topic that I have painted when visiting this picturesque region at the bottom of Yorke Peninsula over the years .
I have also painted Dolphin Beach and Aldinga Beach in what I call a ‘Polyocular method’. Multiple viewpoints with foreshortening. “Sorry no drone or photos”. All these painting are achieved plein air with multiple visits to the location at the same time each day .

CHRIS SUMMER
Chris Summer is a contemporary Australian artist, creating meticulously detailed art with passion and patience. With over a 14 years of experience as a self-taught artist, Chris has developed a distinct vision in his realism artwork, exploring detail and the sensitivity of light.
'My deep love for the process of making fine art
allows me to feel connected to something greater than myself
and to reflect that into the world.'
Born in England in 1979, Chris spent his formative years with his family living on British army bases in countries such as Hong Kong and Germany, before they settled in London when he was in his early teens. At the age of 30 however, Chris traded the bustling city life for the serene beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, where he found the ideal environment to immerse himself in his art.
Nature has always been Chris’s primary inspiration for his artwork. Initially starting out as a wildlife artist, he found joy in capturing the beauty and intricacy of the natural world through his art. This was deeply influenced by his wildlife experiences from travel, which include; cage diving with great white sharks, encounters with Komodo dragons in Indonesia, crocodiles in the Northern Territory of Australia, and snorkeling with whale sharks and giant Manta rays, enriching his understanding and appreciation of the natural environment.
However, he soon realised that while he loved experiencing wildlife in its natural habitat, it didn’t necessarily translate into the greatest satisfaction in his art. Leading him to explore the subject of still life, where he found a new avenue to express his creativity and passion for capturing intricate details with dynamic lighting, allowing him to bring his chosen subjects, such as Urchins and feathers, to life on canvas, with much more creative freedom and in a way that resonates deeply with viewer.

lesley redgate
Born London in 1955, emigrated to South Australia in 1967. Her career as artist and educator began in 1977 upon completing studies in Fine Art at the SA School of Art (Uni SA) and Graphic Design (Tafe SA) in 2002. Lesley has worked as a specialist Art teacher, Graphic Design Lecturer and currently teaches at Adelaide Central School of Art while continuing her arts practice full-time.
Winner of the Thomas Laird Memorial Traveling Art Study Award in 1993 led to overseas travel in 1994 and 1997. Her work was selected by the National Gallery of Victoria for their collection as a recipient of the Michell Endowment, in 1978.
During the 1990’s she painted en plein air in Whites Valley near Willunga with the Strout Farm group which included artists Geoff Wilson, Dave Dallwitz & Hugo Shaw. Drawing inspiration from the changing Fleurieu landscape, the Australian Modernists and French Post-impressionists, Lesley has developed a style which focuses on the subtleties of colour to describe form, capturing the unusual from ordinary scenes recording the history of the area which she has a deep connection to.
She has been a finalist in The Portia Geach, Fleurieu Art Prize, Waterhouse Art Prize, Heysen Art Prize, Well Made –Guildhouse, RSASA Portrait Prize, Capital Permanent at Geelong Art Gallery and Semi Finalist – Doug Moran and has exhibited widely in public and private galleries throughout Australia.
SKELETAL BARNS
‘Skeletal Barns’ depicts a group of corrugated iron sheds located near Sellicks Hill. I’ve painted them throughout the seasons and different times of day. Despite their gradual decline, they are a reminder of our early settler days.
PURPLE, GREEN, ORANGE AT WHITES VALLEY
The Willunga Hills provide a rich source of subject matter. Their rounded forms are a backdrop to many landscapes. Haybales, trees and hills become a series of faceted shapes in warm and cool colours with brushwork that follows the contours of forms.
SHEDS BAKERS GULLY ROAD
Driving past this scene on numerous occasions, there was a silver light cast on the corrugated iron sheds one day. It was a subject that was just waiting for that perfect time of day.
ROGERS ROAD BARNS – LATE IN THE DAY
Set on the plains leading to Sellick’s Hill, stand a group of local heritage barns which I've painted 6 times since 1998. Once used for local dances, they are an example of early iron sheds with roughly hewn tree trunks, telling stories of times gone by. Falling into disrepair, I see their beauty in the fading summer light surrounded by purple thistles.
THE HILLSIDE, KAY BROS
Situated on a hillside in McLaren Vale, The Hillside Vineyards are a part of the Kay Brothers Winemaking tradition. With an appreciation for heritage and quality wine, Colin and Ruth Kay have been very supportive of the arts holding exhibitions in their cellar door gallery. One day Ruth showed me the western view of the winery and homestead from the creek below on the eastern slope. The working life of the winery with the vineyard tracks and buildings created a certain geometry. A composition of verticals where the posts stand amongst the bare winter vines and delineate the vineyard blocks where various varieties such as the 'Hillside Shiraz' are grown.
BUILDING THE PEDLER CREEK BRIDGE
Struck by the dramatic construction of the Pedler Creek Bridge with its sweeping road leading south to the Fleurieu Peninsula, I randomly selected squares and rearranged to create a balance of colour, line, shape and form.
At the same time I wanted to demonstrate the need for balance between the natural and the man made environment in order to protect the character of the place we live in.
The painting invites the viewer to ‘connect’ the parts of the composition and identify with ‘place’.
