THE NATURE OF HOME

NATURE FESTIVAL 2023

CLAIRE KENNETT

Inspired by the human: environmental connection my practices are a personal reflection on how I influence and am influenced by the environment. Using organic materials, forms and colours I represent my symbiotic relationship as part of local ecosystems reflecting my immediate place/space and moment in time whilst being aware of threads that connect me to past and future. Studies of local forest areas and human interaction, representing native bushland with low environmental impact leads me to explore eco dyes and mark making techniques. Remnant Red Gum Trees and connection to local biodiversity are represented using pen and handmade eco dyes, exploring interaction of mediums and environment. This has led to recent investigations with naturally occurring mediums such as clay and silver.

SARAH VIANNE D’CRUZ

Through her creative practice Sarah aims to reveal the unseen qualities hidden beneath the tangible elements of life. There is a wildness to her process. At some point the artist’s intention is abandoned and the essence of the work is free to come to life in a unique and unpredictable way, allowing the beautiful and unexpected to emerge in a special kind of alchemy. Each piece is a truly unique expression of the local landscape.

IRINA NAZAROVA

Living in Australia for quite some time, I unavoidably fell in love with Australian flora, however the simplicity and tenderness of European flowers are deeply rooted in my heart. I depict a collection of Australian flowers and plants that I find incredible and fascinating, along with the European flowers that I grew up with.

Through my latest artworks I explore the nature of flowers, the feelings they give you, the comfort and beauty, against backdrops of darkness and light.

SONJA MACLEAN

Home is where the heart is’ This work shows the menageries of characters and foliage, both native to the region and introduced, who frequent my home in McLaren Vale SA. Sitting precariously together , despite their beauty in a gathering that may at anytime turn to chaos!  Such is the nature of Families and the reality of life tamed in a ‘Wild’ world! A reminder that while we create a place for  ‘Domestic Bliss’ there is always an older energy surrounding us, an instinctive, ancient ‘Wild’ nature that can never be tamed. We are all just visitors in that world.

TRACEY WEGENER

Tracey, a devoted botanical artist, channels her love and passion for cyanotype printing into everything she creates. Her indigo artworks are brought to life with a blend of foraged flora and the radiant South Australian sun. They are intricately detailed and bold and showcase one of the earliest forms of photography. The beautiful and nature themed images are truly a touch of magic and far from simple.

SADIE ROBERTS

Living amongst the suburban forests allows for tree adoration - I delight in their 'ornamental service'. Entering a painting is always new territory, where techniques alter as I resolve and adapt to where the painting wants to go. I do not over plan the painting, only ensure there is adequate excitement around form, and contrasts of lights and darks. Warm hues have cast their magic along side evolving shadows.

SARAH MERKEL

As a creative person I appreciate and studiy the visual and psychological aspects of design, architecture and minimalism.

My works are freestyle and organic. I strive to create depth and light through multiple blocked colour placement and washes in acrylic and other mediums.

My purpose is to create a 'blur" on the canvas whilst portraying and definite sense of place. Saltbush Series is based on my passion for native plants and the endless diversity and beauty of the landscapes I see. As I paint I reconnect to the sense of wonder and serenity that is the natural world.

I return to the wilderness.

Back to nature.

Back to who I was,

Or who I am ...

Going back home.

KIRSTIE MCGREGOR

Nature has always inspired my work. Ever since I was a kid I have felt a strong connection to the environment. I see beauty everywhere I look and it feeds me. From the simplest things like the sun rising to the complex patterns formed on the leaves, nature is beautiful. Inspired by my observations of my local surroundings and my research into different aspects of the environment, my work depicts simple scenes that we often take for granted such as the morning bird singing, a thunderstorm rolling in and the changing of the leaves as the seasons progress. Through the use of watercolour, collage and gelli printing, my works aim to highlight the beauty of nature which is often taken for granted and show it in a new light that will make observers feel the same connection I feel to nature.

These works explore the interaction of people and the local landscape. Arboglyphs - the deliberate marking of trees has a long history commemorating events, territory as well as spontaneous emotions on trees. I am interested in using these ephemeral and often fragmented marks to create a snapshot of contemporary life.
