shades of silence

Following on from a recent Artist Residency in Finland, artist Lynn Lobo paints her meditations on silence and light. The exhibition Shades of Silence is an exploration of the sensory experience of deep snow, expressed through a subtle colour palette of oil paint.

SHADES OF SILENCE

I was invited to an artist residency in Finland for the month of March in 2023. This residency at Arteles Creative Centre was titled SILENCE. It takes place each year during the winter months, in a forest. The residency offers an opportunity to be silent, focus on making art and to interact with the forest. A forest is a community of interdependent beings. Finns always greet the forest before entering it.

This residency appealed to me because I could follow my creative journey inside and out, like following the wind to play. To play and follow the wind is to dance an unknown path, and a profoundly intimate act. I had to fully trust myself and live through my senses.

Most of the gouache studies in this exhibition were painted while I was in Finland. Working on a small format gave me the opportunity to study the winter landscape under different light and weather conditions. I could capture colour notes through memory and while looking out of windows.

The gouache studies helped enormously in creating the feeling tone of snow in the subsequent oil paintings, which were made upon my return to Australia. I have also incorporated these colour notes into still life paintings, as a play on the question of ‘what is inside and what is outside?’

This exhibition invites you enter another part of our earth. The paintings ask you to linger. To allow your perceptions to play in spaces that are less known. What arises for you?
