Learn about edible native plants through drawing, journaling, tasting and connecting.
Join proud Kaurna, Narungga, Kokatha woman, Quahli Newchurch and local nature guide, Hannah Jones for an evening of creative inquiry, delicious edible native plant tastings and a culturally rich and inspiring experience.
This intimate event will be held on Kaurna Country/ Yarta at the stunning Fleurieu Arthouse as part of this years Nature Festival. Upon arrival you will be served a Eucalyptus Martini, seated amongst an array of beautifully displayed native plants and Welcomed to Country by local Kaurna woman, Quahli Newchurch.
Throughout the evening we will study several native plants that are found along the Fleurieu Peninsula which you will be encouraged to journal and learn about; a sketchbook and a variety of drawing materials will be provided for you to creatively record your observations and discoveries.
As each plant is presented, you will learn about their Kaurna significance and some of their cultural uses, as well as their seasonal changes and the relationships they have with other species. You will also receive a tasting plate containing that plant as the main ingredient (thoughtfully prepared by Quahli) while Hannah guides you through how to creatively record them using pencils, ink pens, watercolours paints etc.
This will be a very special and intimate evening of blending art and science as we delve into both ancient and current knowledge systems. We hope to inspire you to incorporate some of these local native plants into your garden and onto your dinner table, to share them with your friends and family, and to do your part to help take care of them
