John Freeman
- Artist

John Freeman is a local artist who resides in Port Willunga, SA.

John trained as an artist and a teacher, completing a number of degrees including Fine Arts, Visual Arts and Education. He taught in several Australian educational institutions for over a decade before venturing into the commercial environment. John’s earlier “naive” style of expression was influenced by his exposure to children’s art.

More recently John has ventured into the area of “abstraction”. His current paintings are Abstract Expressionist in style expressing inner feelings, experiences and ideas in a non-representative manner. In a sense they are metaphors for our life journey, for the ego’s journey. Shapes, lines and colour morph into unique patterns that overlap and merge into one another. These visual elements may symbolize the events we have experienced, the seasons we pass through, the roles we play and the layers of our lives.

In 2020 John was awarded the SALA City of Unley Art Award.

John is particularly interested in exploring the use of art and image making as a reflective practice and a tool for self-inquiry.
