POETRY OF THE EARTH
NATURE FESTIVAL 2022
CLAIRE KENNETT
My mixed media artworks explore various ways of viewing, understanding and interpreting my personal connections with the natural environment.
These artworks form part of my ongoing practice of deeply understanding connections between myself and local, natural environments through various art making techniques. Each artwork is a representation of connection and our beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula.
Representations of trees and birds are drawn from life and coloured in my studio with home-made eco dyes (made by boiling plants to distil the colour), paint pens, fine point permanent markers, oil paints, calligraphy ink and water colour pencils.

NICOLE BLACK
With my art practice I am often looking at surrounding environments as a source of inspiration and escapism from the hum of modern life. Nature has much to teach us if we stop to honour its detail and beauty. My leaf-inspired artworks and murals have drawn inspiration directly from the trees in my home in the Adelaide Hills; imbued with abstract details to show the movement and colour of the surrounding spaces. Recently I have been exploring memories of underwater landscapes. Whilst there is a disparity between these two environments, I want to capture the movement and dreaminess that one can experience in the presence of (and by being present in) nature.

PHOEBE HUNTER
Phoebe Hunter is an environmentally minded artist specialising in botanical dye.
Her approach to making is haphazard and semi-abstracted, leaning into circular
design principles. Often reflecting ideas of circularity and impermanence.
Broken Circle
Some of us seem to forget or keep inventing reasons to forget that we aren't nature.
A cycle of remembering and forgetting.
Stuck on task perhaps.
Though we will breakdown atom by atom,
intertwined with the natural world.

KATE FITTON
SEASHORES
But tired of land, we open ourselves to oceans, tired of time
we give back all that we’ve taken, tired of ourselves
we open ourselves to ourselves at last, sensing the waves
and great abyss of the sea beyond, the ocean stretching on sand
and the long view on the still sea that leads to another life.
⏤David Whyte
These shibori seascapes are inspired by the ever-changing nature of the shore ⎼ a threshold where the intersection of land, sea and sky are in constant flux with the ebbing and flowing tide and the dance of cloud and rain over the ocean. David Whyte’s poem reminds us that like the shoreline, our lives are shaped by forces, currents, undercurrents and other dimensionalities that we might not quite fully understand but can carry us to new places and forms not yet imagined. The seascapes are made with bamboo yarn that has been wound, bound and dipped in indigo, then knitted to reveal a textural spectrum of blues. Each piece is bound to a Tasmanian oak and natural leather hanger.

SADIE ROBERTS
There is a humble sense of mystery about the natural world in these paintings - they celebrate the wordless wonder, the unknown intelligence surrounding us. I enjoy the idea that there is nothing ordinary in nature and explore this through colour and form. The spaces around the forms hold equal enquiry.

PAULA JOSLING
An Ancient technique for a contemporary era, Encaustic is gentle on the environment and perfectly tells my story. Using natural molten Beeswax mixed with Damar, a natural hardener, I use a heat gun or blowtorch to fuse each layer. MAIA GREEN
Inspired by the environment around her, Maia’s paintings layer colour of varying opacity and intricate textures to explore a uniquely Australian aesthetic. “I like the idea that nature can be brought into the domestic setting through my landscape artworks.” These pieces act as reflections of quiet moments in time, reminding us to hold space for the beauty that surrounds, to see the landscape with new perspective and to appreciate the colours, shapes and patterns within.

GEOFF BROMILOW
Geoff Bromilow is influenced by the sensuality and materiality of the timbers and his primary aim is always to bring out the creative integrity and the natural flow of each particular piece. He is not particularly interested in imposing an intellectual dimension on the process of making or defining the works; instead he prefers to leave the viewer to explore the figurative physicality of the works for themselves and to respond emotionally.
